Shomya Mitra**

First Violin

Musician Bio

Violinist Shomya Mitra joins the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra for the 2024-2025 season. Previously, he has performed with the San Diego Symphony and spent two years as a Fellow at the New World Symphony in Miami Beach.

In recent seasons, Shomya has performed at the Tanglewood, Aspen, and Spoleto festivals. He served as concertmaster at the New World Symphony under esteemed conductors Michael Tilson Thomas and Stéphane Denève. During his studies at Oberlin, he participated in master classes with James Ehnes and Pamela Frank.

As an enthusiastic chamber musician, Shomya has been involved in programs such as the Bowdoin Music Festival and was a fellow at the Chiara Quartet’s chamber music intensive at the University of Nebraska. His mentors include Merry Peckham, Ronald Copes, Norman Fischer, and the Ariel Quartet.

Shomya earned his master’s degree from Laurie Smukler’s studio at The Juilliard School and his bachelor’s degree from Oberlin Conservatory, where he studied with Sibbi Bernhardsson and Gregory Fulkerson. Upon graduating, he received the Kaufman Prize for Excellence in Violin.
